Overview. An environmentally conscious construction firm commissioned Unio Design Studio to develop a series of modular, prefabricated houses sitting atop hilltops in the jungles of Port Andratx, Mallorca, that create experiences based on architectural concepts that capture the power of nature to provide unforgettable experiences.

Concept. The core values of the concept are genuine and meaningful experiences that blend cozy natural living with a strong sense of connection to nature. On a hilltop, Unio Design Studio thoughtfully designed a number of houses around pre-existing trees, providing views of the ocean and the jungle as well as a sense of protection and comfort for the occupants.

Design. The beautiful Las Ruinas Jungle Houses are situated on a mountaintop with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and mountains on either side. All elements are connected by a unique horizontal courtyard, which also provides passive cooling for comfort with little energy use. On the ground level, the living area and master bedroom both have access to a firepit and pool surrounded by palm trees and are perfect for gatherings. A significant degree of solitude and a close connection to the views are created by the bedrooms on the top floor floating over the tree line.

Sustainability. Each home is built with a high degree of bioclimatic design, which takes into account natural phenomena like wind, sun, and geological characteristics. This allows the homes to be protected and integrated where appropriate, as well as opened up and closed to provide comfort without using energy. According to Unio Design Studio, beauty and experience are fundamentally sustainable forms that improve the quality of life and endure through the ages.

Construction. In order to achieve the desired effect of seemingly floating rooflines, Unio Design Studio supported the roof planes with a number of thin columns. The lightness of space and the blurring of boundaries between the building and the outside were made possible by a combination of steel and wood construction on concrete foundations.
