Specular means reflection. In this project, reflections represent the entities that direct the creation of today’s reality. One of the main reflections that direct today’s reality is social media. Social media re-forms reality with continuous shares and posts. These shares and posts manipulate, shift, redirect, and alter one’s reality. Users reshape their reality with the people, tags, and events they follow. They recreate their identity with these shares continuously.

Specularism Project mimics this phenomenon metaphorically. The experiencers of the project, first follow the project’s social media account. This social media account is connected to a program that collects and processes data automatically from the followers. It will gather the user’s personal data, and store them in a temporary pool. It will also use a camera to get a live stream from the experiencer simultaneously. Then it processes these personal data and the live stream data into an interactive mosaic matrix like a mirror. (You can reach the demo video above by pressing play or reading the QR code.)

This project reflects personal data as an interactive artwork and it criticizes the vulnerabilities that arise from the mutual trust between the experiencer and the software.

Real-time interactive video display for “Connect for Creativity” artist in residency, by British Council in Turkey, European Union, and the Republic of Turkey.
